Why Purified Water Matters

  • Mineral Content: Tap water can contain minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron, which can interfere with the extraction process and alter the taste of coffee. Purified water removes these impurities, allowing the coffee grounds to release their full flavor potential.

  • pH Balance: The pH of water can affect the extraction of acids and oils from coffee grounds. Purified water typically has a neutral pH, which is ideal for optimal flavor extraction.

  • Taste: Impurities in tap water can contribute to a "metallic" or "off" taste in coffee. Purified water provides a clean canvas for the coffee's flavors to shine through.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Hard water can leave mineral deposits in coffee machines and kettles, leading to reduced efficiency and potential equipment damage. Purified water helps prevent these issues and prolong the life of your equipment.

Methods of Water Purification

  1. Reverse Osmosis: This is a popular method that involves forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane filters out impurities, leaving behind purified water. Reverse osmosis is highly effective at removing contaminants like minerals, bacteria, and viruses.

  2. Distillation: This process involves boiling water, collecting the steam, and condensing it back into liquid form. The impurities remain in the original container, resulting in pure water.

  3. Carbon Filtration: Carbon filters are often used in home water filtration systems. They absorb impurities like chlorine, organic compounds, and some minerals. While not as effective as reverse osmosis or distillation, carbon filtration can significantly improve the taste of tap water.

  4. Ultraviolet (UV) Treatment: UV light is used to kill bacteria and viruses in water. This method is often combined with other purification techniques for complete water treatment.

Tips for Using Purified Water in Coffee Brewing

  • Storage: Store purified water in a clean container away from contaminants.

  • Temperature: 91C or 196F is considered the optimal water temperature for coffee extraction. This subject will be addressed in another Blog article shortly.

  • Brewing Method: Experiment with different brewing methods to find the one that best suits your preferences and the type of coffee you're using. We prefer utilizing the Pour Over Coffee Brewing method because it is very cheap and very easy to execute.

  • Freshness: For the best flavor, use freshly purified water for each brew and fresh roasted coffee.

By incorporating purified water into your coffee-making routine, you can enhance the taste, aroma, and overall quality of your brew. Whether you're a seasoned coffee enthusiast or just starting your journey, the benefits of purified water are undeniable. So, consider investing in a water purification system and experience the difference it can make in your coffee.
